There are many reasons for hair loss and hair thinning in men and women. Though generally speaking, hair loss is a genetic trait, it can also be caused or speeded up because of other factors which include hormonal, medical, lifestyle and diet issues. Hair loss or hair thinning is also affected by factors like sex and age of the person. It does not affect men and women alike and so hair loss solutions for both are also not identical. Let us examine some of the main causes of hair loss in men and women in greater detail.
Hair loss in Men
Androgenetic Alopecia is the medical name for typical “male pattern baldness”. It is triggered in those men whose hair follicles are sensitive to the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) hormone. In this pattern of baldness, the DHT-sensitive hair usually found on the top and front of the head, become weaker and thinner. Eventually they just stop growing.
Hair loss in women
Around menopause, the production of the female hormone estrogen dips. Till menopause occurs, estrogen counteracts the effects of DHT in women and prevents hair loss. However, once estrogen levels are reduced, it leads to thinning of hair. Unlike men, in women hair follicles are affected by DHT on the entire scalp and not only on the top or front of head.
Diet and Nutrition
Sometimes premature hair loss can set in because of a persistent low-protein dietadopted by a person. Wrong eating habits can also lead to nutritional deficiency. The body reacts to low protein presence in body by retarding hair growth.
High Stress or Trauma
Stress straightaway affects hormonal balance of the body causing a significantly weakened scalp. As a result, considerable amounts of strands of hair go into the resting (telogen) phase.
Medications and treatments
Some prescription drugs have bad side-effects on health of hair and lead to its weakening and shedding. The most common medicines which affect hair growth are associated with medications for depression, arthritis, heart problems or high blood pressure. Radiation treatment of cancer also leads to massive and sudden loss of hair.
This condition is caused when the immune system for some inexplicable reasons, considers hair follicles as antibodies and tries to shut them down. The area of damage in this case may be very small. However, in a similar condition called Alopecia Totalis, the entire hair onthe whole body is lost.
Hair styling, Hair-straightening, Hair Dyeing or bleaching are some of the causes that lead to hair damage. Fashion conscious men and women go for frequent hair colouring and hair styling to enhance their looks. If done by well-trained professionals,it may not be damaging. But untrained hands and sub-standard products can lead to severe damage to hair.
Advancement in Hair loss treatment
There has been massive advancement in hair loss treatment techniques in the last few years. These techniques include the FUT (follicular unit transplant) method and the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. The results in both cases are nothing less than spectacular. New research is also on to enhance the hair growth with the help of hair cloning. Thankfully, baldness is no more an irreversible loss!
